INTERIOR DESIGN AND DECORATING FAQs

Modern dining room with round table and chandelier.

What is the difference between an interior decorator and an interior designer?

Interior decorating focuses on the finishing elements of a home, including furniture, lighting, rugs, window treatments, paint colours, artwork and accessories. Interior design for renovations involves more detailed planning, such as space planning, floor plans, cabinetry design, lighting and electrical layouts, finish selections and 3D renderings.

I am a Certified Interior Decorator who also provides comprehensive residential interior design services for renovations. The appropriate service depends on whether you are furnishing and decorating your home, renovating it, or doing both.

2. What happens during the initial design consultation?

Every project begins with a brief discovery call to discuss your home, the areas involved and the type of help you need. Before our meeting, I will ask you to complete a client questionnaire and share any relevant photographs, plans or inspiration images.

During the two-hour consultation in your home, we will discuss your style, priorities, budget and timeline. I will review the space, offer professional advice and help identify any layout, furnishing, finish or renovation considerations. At the end of the consultation, we will discuss the most appropriate next steps and design package for your project.

3. What does the initial consultation cost?

The initial two-hour consultation is $450 plus HST and is prepaid to reserve your appointment.

The consultation provides professional design guidance and allows us to define the scope of your project. If you require additional design work, I will recommend a package or prepare a proposal based on the services you need.

4. Do you provide interior design services for renovations?

Yes. I provide interior design and planning services for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, main floors and full-home renovations.

Depending on the project, my services can include space planning, floor plans, cabinetry design, lighting and electrical layouts, finish and fixture selections, 3D renderings, a detailed scope of work and coordination with contractors, suppliers and trades.

5. Can you work with my existing contractor or cabinet supplier?

Yes. I can work with your existing contractor, cabinet supplier or other trades, provided they are willing to collaborate and follow the approved design plans.

I will provide the information needed to communicate the design intent and can review plans, finishes and cabinetry details with your team. Your contractor and suppliers remain responsible for confirming site measurements, construction requirements, pricing and installation details.

If you do not already have a contractor or supplier, I can also introduce you to trusted professionals from my network when appropriate.

6. Do you create floor plans and 3D renderings?

Yes. Depending on your design package, I can create floor plans, furniture layouts, cabinetry concepts, electrical and lighting layouts, 3D views and virtual tours.

These drawings and renderings help you understand how the proposed space will look and function before you approve major purchases or begin construction. They also help communicate the design clearly to contractors, cabinetmakers and suppliers.

7. Do you design kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes. Kitchen and bathroom design are important parts of my renovation services.

I can assist with layouts, cabinetry design, storage planning, countertops, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, paint colours and other finishes. I also create 3D renderings so you can visualize the finished space and make decisions more confidently before construction begins.

8. Can you help me select finishes without managing the entire renovation?

Yes. If you already have a contractor and do not require full project management, I can provide a finish and material selection service.

This may include flooring, tile, countertops, backsplash, cabinetry colours and styles, hardware, plumbing fixtures, lighting and paint colours. I will help you create a cohesive palette and avoid costly or disconnected selections, while your contractor remains responsible for construction and overall project management.

9. What areas do you serve?

Sonia Sudan Interiors is based in Oakville and primarily serves homeowners in Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Milton and surrounding areas.

If your home is outside these areas, please contact me to discuss the location and scope of your project. Travel time or additional fees may apply to projects outside my regular service area.

10. What size of project do you accept?

I work on projects ranging from focused decorating and finish-selection consultations to complete kitchens, bathrooms, main floors and full-home renovations.

For smaller projects, an initial consultation may provide all the guidance you need. Projects requiring research, drawings, sourcing, purchasing or ongoing coordination are completed through an appropriate design package. The discovery call and initial consultation will help determine whether my services are the right fit for your project.

11. How long does the design process take?

The timing depends on the size of the project, the number of rooms involved and how quickly decisions and approvals are made. A design concept is typically presented approximately four weeks after the initial consultation, although larger or more detailed renovations may require additional time.

Revisions, product availability, contractor schedules and changes to the approved design can extend the timeline. Once the design is approved, furniture, custom cabinetry and other made-to-order items may require 10–12 weeks or longer for production and delivery. Construction timing will be confirmed separately with your contractor.

12. Do you order furniture and materials for clients?

Yes. Purchasing and implementation services are available as part of applicable design packages.

Once selections and pricing have been approved, I can place and track orders, coordinate deliveries and installations, communicate with suppliers and help manage any order-related issues. Depending on the project, I can also coordinate furniture delivery, window-treatment installation, artwork placement and final styling.

Clients who prefer to make their own purchases can discuss a design-only or selection-based service during the initial consultation.
